The Naghash Ensemble of Armenia — Seattle Debut
For the first time in Seattle, SAMA: Music + Art presents The Naghash Ensemble of Armenia at Town Hall Seattle’s Great Hall on Tuesday, November 17.
Described as “the sound of Ancient Armenia reinvented for the 21st century,” The Naghash Ensemble brings together Armenian sacred and folk traditions with contemporary classical music. Created by Armenian-American composer and pianist John Hodian, the ensemble sets the writings of 15th-century Armenian poet and priest Mkrtich Naghash to music that feels at once ancient, contemporary, and unmistakably Armenian.
Three extraordinary female vocalists are joined by duduk, oud, dhol, and piano, creating a powerful sound that moves between folk, chamber music, sacred music, and the cinematic.
Their acclaimed Songs of Exile explores displacement, longing, spirituality, resilience, and our enduring connection to home, themes rooted in Armenian history but resonant far beyond it.
More Than a Concert
Before the performance, Armenian-American conductor, educator, and Armenian music scholar Tigran Arakelyan will give a special talk introducing the poetry, history, and cultural context behind the music in the Reading Room
Guests can also gather over Armenian food from Hye Life Cafe & Bar, with vegetarian and non-vegetarian meals available for purchase before the concert.
