A voice that moves from a whisper to a cry, carrying grief, joy, defiance, and everything in between. SAMA: Music & Art welcomes Italian singer Maria Mazzotta to Rainier Arts Center for an intimate evening of Southern Italian music with extraordinary emotional force.

From Salento, in the heel of Italy’s boot, Mazzotta draws on the region’s deep singing traditions and the driving rhythms of pizzica, reaching across the Mediterranean into the sounds of the Balkans. Her performances bring generations of songs into the present with an intensity you don’t need to understand Italian to feel.

For fifteen years, Mazzotta performed and recorded with the celebrated Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino before building an adventurous solo career. Along the way, she has collaborated with artists including Bobby McFerrin, Ballaké Sissoko, and Piers Faccini, and developed a distinctive partnership with Albanian cellist Redi Hasa.

Her solo recordings, from Amoreamaro to Onde, explore love, loss, resilience, and release. With Onde, she brings electric textures and the raw energy of rock into conversation with her Southern Italian roots, giving traditional songs a fierce contemporary pulse.
